National Register Eligibility Testing
Harris County, Texas
Investigation, geoarchaeological studies, and eligibility testing at archaeological sites located along Cypress Creek were initiated by HRA Gray & Pape in accordance with United States Army Corps of Engineers permitting requirements. Testing at these sites resulted in a recommendation that two of three sites investigated were eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D.
Evaluation testing at Site 41HR997 suggests that the site was the locus of multiple activities most likely associated with a seasonal campsites activity dating from the Middle to Transitional Archaic. Evaluation testing at 41HR1000 suggested a similar site use dating to the Late Prehistoric.
Following the Texas Historical Commission (THC) concurrence with this recommendation, project developers began to finalize modifications to their land plan for a proposed residential development to ensure avoidance and protection of these important cultural resources. HRA Gray & Pape developed an avoidance plan and nomination forms necessary for State Archeological Landmark designation.
