National Register Eligibility Testing

Harris County, Texas

Map sampleHRA Gray & Pape was contracted by Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) to perform National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing on a series of archaeological sites along Rummel Creek in northwest Houston, Harris County, Texas. The project area along the Rummel Creek was threatened by severe erosion and HCFCD proposed bank stabilization using riprap and revegetation. HRA Gray & Pape archaeologists worked with HCFCD to ensure that stabilization efforts would not damage archaeological resources within the stabilization area.

ArtifactsArchaeological data recovery was conducted within portions of the site where mitigation was necessary and the remainders of the sites were preserved in place.  The sites along the creek are small, single component Late Prehistoric sites that may have been related to a larger Late Prehistoric settlement system.  Multiple phases of stone tool production, in particular activities associated with Perdiz point manufacture, were identified at the sites.

Field investigations consisted of geophysical survey using ground penetrating radar, hand excavation of shovel tests to detect near surface cultural features, and geophysical electrical resistivity survey to map pre-Holocene paleochannels under sites.
