Imperial Sugar Complex Architectural and Archaeological Investigation

Sugar Land, Texas

HRA Gray & Pape performed cultural resources surveys of 743 acres of privately owned property proposed for commercial and residential development in Fort Bend County, Texas. Associated with this property is the historic Imperial Sugar Plant Complex. Work was performed on behalf of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Galveston District in order to fulfill requirements set forth by 33 CFR Part 325, Appendix C - Procedures for the Protection of Historic Properties.

HRA Gray & Pape’s investigations also considered cultural landscape components within the Imperial Sugar complex. The complex includes architecturally significant examples of load-bearing masonry and steel-frame, concrete-reinforced industrial buildings dating from the 1910s through the 1940s. Later architectural resources are reflective of changing building technologies and industrial processing techniques. The complex includes 59 architectural resources and possesses a high level of integrity, with the location, setting, feeling, association, workmanship, design, and materials all intact. As a result, the Imperial Sugar Complex was recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criteria A, B, and C. In keeping with the history of the area and significance of the sugar industry to Fort Bend County, the project developer plans to make use of several of the Imperial Sugar Complex buildings in its project plans.
