The Chisholm Trail Historical Brochure
Texas
In August of 2001 HRA Gray & Pape LLC contracted with the Texas Historical Commission to provide research, writing and photography services for the preparation of a heritage tourism brochure about the Texas Chisholm Trail.
Focusing on the massive cattle drives originating from Texas following the Civil War, this brochure details both the historical significance of Texas places and the current opportunities for tourism along the cattle route. The Trail brochure provides a unique glimpse into the cattle drive era. It provides tourists with a broad understanding of the period and the significant places involved, while simultaneously adding new information on women and minority participation in this unique period of American history.
One of the key aspects of HRA Gray & Pape's involvement with the process was meeting with citizen groups to discuss the historical idea of the trail. Large segments of the populations in both Texas and Oklahoma argue that the Chisholm Trail existed only within the borders of Oklahoma. From the historian's perspective we view the trail as an historical concept as much as an actual physical location. In that broader definition it is evident that without Texas cattle, the Chisholm Trail cattle drives would not have occurred. Explaining this reality to the public was an important task for HRA Gray & Pape Historians.
The brochure was officially released in 2002 as part of the Historical Commission's statewide Heritage Tourism program (download here).
